Paul Chong Shune Lee-Shanok passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 92 on Sunday February 19, 2023 in Sparks, Nevada. He was born on May 19, 1930 in Mauritius to Chan Tai Mui and Lee Shan Ok. He met and later wed Maria Ah-Mee Teen Tioon in 1961 and lived in Mauritius with their five children before they immigrated to the United States in 1978.
Paul worked as a Chef for the Eldorado Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada for 25+ years before retiring in 2003. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2015 at the age of 85. This incurable and progressive disease is a degenerative brain disorder which affects basic functions and quality of life, but Paul managed to live with this disorder as best he could, taking each day as it comes with a positive disposition and outlook on life. Over time, the disease caused him to become weaker and progressively worse and eventually it took a toll on his body.
Paul is survived by his wife Maria and their five children and their spouses - Paulette (Steve) Klene, Lisette (Allen) Shum, Camille (Lily) Lee-Shanok, David Lee-Shanok, and Eric (Katrina) Lee-Shanok. He is survived by his three granddaughters Micah Marie Cristobal, Katelin Shum, and Lexus Lee-Shanok, and a great grandson Caleb Joshua Cristobal.
Paul is also survived by his brothers - Michael Chong Yan Lee-Shanok, Alain Lee-Shanok, and Cyril Lee-Shanok, and his sisters - Gilberte Ahken, Chantal Yue Sik Kin, Cecile Law Kwet Cheong, and Jacqueline Ng Youn Chen.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son Daniel Lee-Shanok, and siblings Peter Lee-Shanok, Chai Siong, Luk Lee-Shanok, Linda Chaimee Cassidy.
Paul was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend to those who knew him. He was a hard working man and wanted nothing but the best for his family and those around him. He was generous to people he met, enjoyed their company, and always had a positive outlook on life. He enjoyed going places, reading, learning new things, and loved Chinese movies, concerts, and music.
The viewing and funeral service will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm followed by a lunch reception at Masonic Memorial Chapel at 437 Stoker Avenue in Reno, Nevada. Burial will be held on the same day at 3:00 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery at 435 Stoker Avenue, in Reno, Nevada.
