Paul G. Alberti Obituary

Mar 24, 1923 - Nov 01, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
LONDONDERRY - The Rev. Paul Gerhard Alberti, 93, peacefully passed away to be with his Lord on Nov. 29, 2016, following a period of declining health at Our Lady of Consolation in West Islip, New York. At the end of his life, Paul was surrounded by his loving family and in the care of the dedicated nurses, doctors and staff of OLC and The Good Shepherd Hospice. He was born on March 24, 1923, in Brodhagen, Ontario, Canada, as the youngest son of Rev. Johannes and Johanna Alberti. His family emigrated to the U.S. in 1932 and settled in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and eventually Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended public schools. He graduated from Olney Senior High School in Philadelphia in 1940 and then Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, in 1944. He attended the Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and was ordained in February 1946. He obtained a graduate degree from the New York Theological Seminary in 1975. On June 23, 1946, he married Dorothy E. Gross in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Their life together included various periods of time in Long Branch, New Jersey (Reformation Lutheran Church); Rochester, New York (Transfiguration Lutheran Church); Kenmore, New York (Lutheran Church of St. Mark); Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (Good Shepard Lutheran Church); Milford, Connecticut; White Plains, New York (Trinity Lutheran Church); Babylon, New York (Cross of Christ Lutheran Church); Londonderry, Vermont (various churches throughout Vermont); and Branford, Connecticut. He dedicated his life in service to the churches and its congregants wherever he served. We remember his commitment and love with pride and humility. After retirement, Paul and Dorothy moved to Londonderry, Vermont, where they founded Koinonia of Vermont with the mission of the creation of a New England center for development of spirituality and Christian community. Paul's dedication is best expressed in this quote from Mother Teresa: "The fruit of Silence is prayer. The fruit of Prayer is faith. The fruit of Faith is love. The fruit of Love is service. The fruit of Service is peace." Please join us, his family, in remembering the peace available to us all. Paul was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy, and is survived by five loving children; two daughters Paula Ciancola of Branford, CT, and Janet Bernzott of West Islip, NY; three sons Kenneth (Lisa) of Londonderry, VT, Peter (Faith) of South Londonderry, VT, and Richard (Colette) of East Islip, NY; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation arrangements are being handled by Chapey Funeral Home of West Islip, New York. Memorial services are to be held on Dec. 10, 2016, at 1 p.m. at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Babylon, New York, and Dec. 17, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church in Londonderry, Vermont. Memorial contributions may be made in Paul's memory to either The Second Congregational Church at 2051 North Main St., Londonderry, VT 05148; or Cross of Christ Lutheran Church at 576 Deer Park Ave., Babylon, NY 11702.
