PAUL DOUGLAS TOBIN, 67 MOUNT CARROLL - Paul Douglas Tobin, 67, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died suddenly at his home in Mount Carroll, Saturday morning, May 4, 2013. Paul was born on May 25, 1945, in Belvidere Illinois; the son of Curtis R. and Virginia (Peterson) Tobin. Paul was a 1963 graduate of Belvidere High School. He earned his undergraduate and masters degree from Western Illinois University. Paul earned his CAS from Northern Illinois University. On June 14, 1969, Paul married Nancy McKeown in Belvidere. They were married for 44 years, during which time Nancy was a full-time educator, raising 2 children. In more recent years, Paul and Nancy have spent their time doting on their three grandchildren. He dedicated his professional life to education and administration. Paul was Principal and Athletic Director of Forreston High School for 14 years; Superintendent of the Mt. Carroll School District for 10 years; Superintendent of the Preston, Iowa School District for 7 years. His last position was the Athletic Director for the West Carroll School District. Paul was a member and past President of the Mt. Carroll Rotary Club, board member of the Mt. Carroll CDC and the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, and the American and Illinois Associations of School Administrators. Paul loved to volunteer at community events, especially his beloved Mayfest. Paul loved and was loved by his family, friends and thousands of students whose lives he helped frame. He had a huge heart and a great sense of humor. Paul was a sports enthusiast both as a participant, coach, and fan, never missing his children's events. In particular he had a passion for his beloved Chicago Cubs, the Bears, Notre Dame and the local school districts. Paul is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Shannon (Jim) Miller of Chicago; son, Douglas (Amy) Tobin of Plainfield; three grandchildren, Gabrielle Miller, and Samuel and Alexander Tobin; sister, Mary (Rodney Sher) Tobin of Evanston; brother, Curt (Brenda) Tobin of Poplar Grove; and loving nieces and nephews. Paul is preceded in death by both parents. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll. Interment will take place at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the West Carroll Middle School, Mt. Carroll. Paul's family invites everyone to wear their school colors or Cubs gear to the visitation.
