Early On December 29, 2025 Peggy peacefully put on her traveling shoes to Heaven home with her family.
Peggy was born September 26 ,1947 to the late Eula Mae Daniels Short Johnson and Elbert Lee Barnes. She was the 10th Child of Eula’s 11 and Elbert’s 2nd oldest of 9.
Peggy was educated in the Pitt County schools in Greenville NC. She attended Sally Branch Primary and she graduated from Epps High School class of 1967. When Peggy Graduated she left Greenville to go visit her older siblings up north in Long Island NY, Queens NY and Hackensack NJ and her dad in Bridgeport CT. While visiting and trying to decide what to do with herself and her life she saw a sign for, job corps and to get a college degree. So she signed up and it took her life to Charleston WV.
Peggy was in JobCorps in Charleston WV and eventually enrolled into WV State University , where she obtained 2 degrees in Criminal Justice an AS & BS. After she graduated from college she began her career at the US Postal Service 1976.
Just think she did all of this while being a single mom of two. Raymond Andrew Johnson 8/23/1965 & Kimberly Dawn Johnson 1/18/1973.
Peggy eventually transferred from Charleston WV to Baltimore MD in August of 1983. Where a new life began for her and Kimberly.
Peggy continued her career at the US Postal Service where she was in management her entire career except year one. Peggy treated her employees well, helped people get promoted, and served as an officer in the NAPS (National Association of Postal Supervisors) until her retirement in 2/2008. Even after retirement Peggy stayed active in the NAPS and Red Hatters social club and she served on Pastors Aide and the Women's Ministry, at United Baptist Church.
Peggy still loved attending the NAPS Annual Crab feast where she was big with getting those crab feast tickets sold every year, Until the last 6 years where she was diagnosed with Dementia, she still remained deeply involved. Last year marked the first time she did not attend and sadly not long afterward, she peacefully returned home.
Peggy Showed up for everyone and everybody near far. Peggy traveled all the time up and down 95. She was a family person and she loved her family. From different nieces, nephews, sisters that have stayed with her over the years. She is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Peggy loved going fishing and going to the bingo when she was in Greenville. She also loved going on casino trips with her big Sister Dot, up and down 95 from Foxwood to whatever Casino In Florida. She also loved going to lunch with her retired girlfriends from the US Postal Service, and would go out to a different restaurant every first Friday of each month. From Double T Diner, Rusty Scupper, Timbuktu etc…..
Peggy was an advice bowler in her time in the late 80’s and the 90’s. She bowled in a league out of the Dundalk Fairlanes bowling alley then to Towson.
Peggy was very active all the time. She has participated in several volunteer initiatives and she has walked in the arthritis foundation and March of Dimes. She has put in work for the telethon for UNCF getting pledges.
Peggy also went on several trips with her
social group the Red Hatters. She loved enjoying life whatever she was doing.
Peggy was preceded in death by her Parents Eula Mae Daniels Short Johnson and Elbert Lee Barnes. Her only son Raymond Andrew Johnson, 5 sisters Dorothy O Thompson, Geraldine(Jerri) Johnson Forbes, Ethel Gertrude Johnson Artis, Ruby Dee Johnson Jones, Jean Gorham. 6 brothers James Floyd Johnson, Remius (Johnny) Lloyd Johnson, Lawrence Earl Johnson, Edward Earl Johnson, Wille Ray (Buster) Johnson, Stephen El-Amin, Derek Barnes. God parents Trula Isabel Stone and Douglas T Davis.
Peggy Leave to cherish her memories Her loving and devoted daughter Kimberly D Johnson Dent (Kenneth) Rosedale, MD, 3 granddaughters Kiara Denay Johnson, Kapria Monday Vandervall, Kennae Mariah Dent and 1 grandson Dewaun Kristopher Harvey, bonus grandson Kenneth M Dent Sr. 4 great grandsons( Jayden R Cruz, Kam’ryn Justyn Paul Lee and Kai’dyn Jovan Kristopher Lee, Kenneth M Dent Jr ) All of Baltimore, MD. 3 Sisters Calu R Barnes & Sophia Mimi Barnes Purvis of Middle River, MD , Dawn M. Barnes Floyd of North Carolina . 3 Brothers Elbert Wardell Barnes of Massachusetts, Joel Rex Barnes, Tracy Barnes of Bridgeport, CT. Numerous nieces and nephews too many to name. She has some special sister girlfriends that will cherish her memories as well:
