Dr. Perry CarrollAnderson, SCDr. Edward Perry Carroll, professor emeritus of music at Anderson University and conductor emeritus of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, died on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at AnMed Health Medical Center. He was 82.A native Floridian, Dr. Carroll was born on December 17, 1934, to the late Oliver H. P. Carroll and Sarah Amsden Carroll. After graduating from Miami (Fla.) Senior High School in 1953, he earned a bachelor's degree in music at Baylor University. There he was elected to Phi Mu Alpha and Kappa Kappa Psi, honorary music societies. Following graduation, Dr. Carroll served his country for over eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a trombonist in the band program. He was based in Louisiana, Nebraska, and Spain. He later received a master's of church music (MCM) degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After teaching music at Brewton-Parker College, Dr. Carroll earned his doctor of education (EdD) degree in music at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1975 he began his teaching career at Anderson College (now Anderson University), retiring in 2001. A co-founder of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Carroll conducted the ensemble from 1975 until his retirement in 2001. He also directed the Electric City Swing Band from its inception until 2006. Dr. Carroll was a faithful member of Boulevard Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, and sang tenor in the sanctuary choir. A member of the Seekers Sunday School Class, he formerly served the church as an interim minister of music. In 2004 the church ordained Dr. Carroll to the ministry as a chaplain. He was endorsed as a chaplain by The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship to Civil Air Patrol, the volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. In 2012 Chaplain (LTC) Carroll was named squadron Chaplain of the year by the SC Wing of CAP.He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marion Harvey Carroll; a daughter, Kathy Choate and her husband David, of Fort Mill, SC; two grandchildren, Harvey Ellen Choate, and Charlotte Choate; a sister-in-law, Cindy Wilder and her husband Ray, of Germantown, TN; and a number of nieces and nephews.A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at Boulevard Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Johnny F. McKinney officiating.
