Huckel , Peter Elliott.Peter Elliott Huckel, 77, of Deep River, CT, formerly of Riverside, CT died suddenly on Sunday, December 11, 2016 doing what he loved best: splitting and stacking firewood. Peter was born on November 1, 1939 in New York City to the late Oliver Wentworth and Mary Elizabeth (Brown) Huckel. He grew up in Riverside, CT going to Riverside School and graduated from Greenwich High School. He attended Arizona State University. He joined the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Oregon and Washington. While serving in the Coast Guard, he started writing letters to Evelyn Stevens, a nursing student in Florida. Upon completing his service in 1963, he went to Florida, married Evelyn and moved to CT where they've lived their entire 53+ years married life. Most people tell of employment at this point, but we're not most people. For those who were truly blessed to have known Pop, knew that he was a kind soul who made friends everywhere, whether a stranger in a check out line or waiting for a car to be serviced, what started as a stranger became a friend. He loved telling stories of growing up, high school, adventures in the Coast Guard, or just his day. He texted like Tarzan "Hi Hill, how you? Me good. Cold here. Wood stove going." which will be truly missed. Even though he grew up not liking dogs, his true best friend was his miniature schnauzer, Emily, who'd help him in the yard and would snuggle with him on cold days. Along with his wife of over 53 years, Pop is survived by his four children, Hillary Huckel Wesney and her husband Douglas of Doylestown, PA, Derek Huckel and his wife Denise of Deep River, CT, David Huckel of Jacksonville, FL and Daniel Huckel of Olympia, WA…he also is survived by six grandchildren, Peter Wesney, Elizabeth Wesney, Rebekah Wesney, Carlin Huckel, Dillion Huckel and Dean Huckel. Besides his parents, Pop was predeceased in death by his older brother Oliver Wentworth Huckel Jr and his twin sister, Susannah (Wendy) Huckel. We'd love for you to celebrate his Glory day with us on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 2pm at Christ Chapel, 1185 Durham Road, Madison, CT. Come with happy stories to tell.
