Pete Uhrhammer, 72, of DeMotte, went to be with his Lord on Jan. 11, 2015, in Punta Gorda, Florida. He died peacefully in the arms of his sons and wife. Pete was born on Sept. 4, 1942, in Rensselaer, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Loding) Uhrhammer. Pete attended school in Cedar Lake and Crown Point. He was was a 1961 graduate of Crown Point High School. From 1963-1966, Pete served our country proudly, in the 3rd Marine Corp and was a Vietnam Veteran. On July 4, 2014, Pete was honored by his community for his military service. He was a member of the DeMotte American Legion, Post 440, the Color Guard and the Grocer's Union, Local 01546C. On March 4, 1967, at the First Baptist Church, Crown Point, Pete married his best friend Dorothy (Sterk). The couple was happily married for 48 years and lived in DeMotte for 45 years.Pete enjoyed watching all sports. He loved to golf, play tennis, bike, hike, play horseshoes and softball. In his healthier days, he was an avid runner and ran many marathons and shorter races. Pete was very interested in old cars and trucks. He participated in several car shows with his 1972 VW Beetle and 1979 Dodge Lil Red Express truck. In recent years, Pete enjoyed spending time with his family. He found joy in watching the activities of his grandchildren; he was very proud of his sons and grandchildren. They loved their dad and their "Papa" very much. Pete took pride in taking care of his lawn and home and he always found time to have morning coffee with his buddies at Tysen's.The only thing that Pete did not like was cold weather. After retirement, Pete and Dorothy spent winters in Palm Coast, Florida, and enjoyed traveling during the summer. He especially liked visiting state and national parks.Pete was a member of the Bethel Ministries in Crown Point, and a former member, and always friend, of Community Bible Church of DeMotte.Pete was diagnosed with cancer over 14 years ago. He always had a good attitude, a positive outlook on life. He was a warrior to the very end. Pete received Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age, and he had complete confidence in the Lord. With the enabling of God, Pete won his battle with cancer everyday by his courage, faith, perseverance and determination. He was always thankful for the prayers and words of encouragement from his family and friends. The family is sincerely grateful for the excellent medical care Pete received at the University of Chicago Hospital, the VA clinic in Crown Point, and the Hospice Care in Punta Gorda.Pete leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Dorothy, and two sons, Aaron (Rhonda) Uhrhammer of DeMotte and Dennis (fiancé Andreanna Hodgini) of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Stormie (Rudy) Eckstein, Erin, Drew, Evan, Trent and Emily Uhrhammer; great-grandbabies, twins Savannah and Zoe Eckstein; brothers, John (Donna) Uhrhammer and Charles (Betty) Uhrhammer; sisters, Ann Adams, Dorothy Whittaker, Carolyn Elm and Minnie (Bryan) Coree; brothers-in-law, John (Brenda) Sterk and Henry (Winigene) Sterk; sisters-in-law, Carrie (Mike) Romanchok, Connie (Chuck) Widner, Debby (Jeff) Weideman and Carol Sterk; special uncle and aunt, Dick and Betty Sterk; many much loved, nephews, nieces and cousins; many caring, uplifting and fun-loving friends and neighbors. Not to be forgotten, his faithful companion, Coco Bean.A private family visitation will be held at 8 a.m. at the Jackson Funeral Service, DeMotte. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Jackson Funeral Service, DeMotte, with Pastor Steve DeWitt officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10 - 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Jackson Funeral Service, DeMotte. Military Rites will be held at the Holland Cemetery, DeMotte at 12 noon.In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in memory of Pete, to the Haven of Hope Academy in Ghana, West Africa.
