STANSBURY, Phillip Martin Phillip Martin Stansbury, age 94 of Atlanta, Georgia passed away peacefully on November 18, 2016 of natural causes. Phil was born on December 5, 1921 in West Union, Iowa to Mylan Stansbury and Lorraine Barnhart Stansbury. He graduated from University High School in Westwood, Calif. in 1939. He also attended the University of California - Los Angeles until World War II. During the Second World War he served in the Navy in San Pedro, Calif., Australia and New Guineaalong with other areas. He was discharged after the War in 1945 as a Chief Petty Officer. He married Virginia Coffrin in 1946 in Los Angeles, California and they remained married for over 68 years until her passing. Beginning after the war, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railway followed by Retail Credit Company (later Equifax) in Sales and Marketing. His career took him from Los Angeles to Des Moines, Iowa and finally to the Atlanta home office. He retired as Assistant Vice President of Life and Health Claims in 1984. In his free time, Phil was an accomplished woodworker, photographer, traveler, reader and an avid gardener. Together with his wife, Virginia, they maintained a one acre yard through nearly 30 years of retirement. He was also active in the Kiwanis Club and held season tickets to the Atlanta Symphony for over 20 years. In his later years he became interested in Christian Theology and was a careful and prayerful reader and knowledgeable discussant of Scripture, as well as the work of Henri Nouwen and Don Postema. He and Virginia also particularly enjoyed driving trips, as Phil was a lifelong automotive enthusiast. Those trips took them to 49 states and 11 Canadian provinces. They also cruised to Alaska and through the Panama Canal. He enjoyed sharing his many photographic images with family and friends. Phil was a wise and generous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather over parts of eight decades. He is survived by his son Jim and daughter-in-law Ellen Stansbury of Atlanta, Georgia, his grandson Jason Stansbury (Marilyn) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, his granddaughter Kelsey Greene (Taylor) of El Dorado Hills, California, and his great-grandchildren Beckett, Keller, and Reese Greene.
