ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Phyllis G. Thompson, 95, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016. Phyllis is survived by her four children, Patty Thompson-Jones, Sandee Butterworth (Milt), John M. Thompson Jr. (Janice) and Thomas G. Thompson. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Milton Butterworth III (Jeannette), Andrea Jones (Cara), Luke Butterworth (Hope), Jennifer Hudgens (Todd), Meredith Peine (Adam), John Thompson III (Shannon), Henry Thompson, Charlie Thompson and Mia Thompson; and 12 great-grandchildren. Phyllis was born on February 22, 1921, in Lafayette, Indiana, to Walter and Gladys Thomas. One of the first women to graduate from Purdue University, she received a BA in institutional management in 1942, the same year that she married the love of her life, John M.Thompson, who preceded her in death on May 1, 1990. Phyllis was a big-hearted, trail-blazing matriarch who inspired all who knew her. Her strong belief in equal rights for all and the power of education to illuminate many different perspectives meant that she often challenged social norms and popular ideas. A trained dietitian, she was a scientist of healthy lifestyle and balanced nutrition. Her intelligence and style matched her strong desire to help others. She did not live an average life. Her regrets were few. She was energetic, wildly spontaneous, uninhibited, unflinchingly spoke her truth, and was full of charming diplomacy. Dozens of stories about Phyllis Thompson will undoubtedly be passed down for generations. Her fun-loving nature and open heart gave rise to many friendships. With the motto "the more the merrier," she welcomed all into her home. Her vibrant spirit and DNA will live on in all those lucky enough to call her Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, or friend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) for Women. Memorial service will be held at a later date. Asheville Area Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
