Phyllis J. LightnerYorkPhyllis Jean Thompson Lightner, 93, died peacefully at home on August 25, 2016.Phyllis was born on July 16, 1923, a daughter of the late J. Frank and Phyllis Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Lightner; and her sister, Elizabeth Hill.Phyllis graduated from William Penn High School and held Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ.She retired as a music teacher in the York City School District, served as organist and choir director at numerous area churches, and gave private piano lessons in her home for many years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of York, where she directed the handbell choir.Phyllis devoted her life to her career as a music educator. She could not go anywhere in this community without running into someone who knew her. All over York County there are former music students and choir members who credit Mrs. Lightner with having inspired them in their love of music. Music was her life. Now she can rejoice in the music again!Phyllis is survived by her son, Norman Lightner and his wife, Cathy Dunn; grandchildren, Lora, Michael, Gregory, and Katherine Lightner; step-grandchildren, Luke and Julia Dunn; great-grandchildren, Zane, Aldéa, Abigail, and Miles; a nephew, Carl Hill; and a niece, Pamela C. Agelastos.A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, 1111 E. Market St., York, with her minister, the Rev. C. Kyle Gott, officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mt.
