PHYLLIS H. MERGEN, 95 FREEPORT - Phyllis H. Mergen, 95, of Freeport, died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. She was born on April 24, 1918, in Freeport, IL, the daughter of Fred and Rose (Young) Kunkle. She married Eugene "Whitey" Mergen on November 6, 1954, in Freeport, IL. Phyllis worked as a checker at A.P. Grocery Store. She was a member of the Freeport Moose Auxiliary and the Freeport Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, music, dancing, and being around people. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Eugene "Whitey" Mergen of Freeport, IL; two sons, William Loring and Richard (Sarah) Loring, both of Freeport; two daughters, JoAnne Chambers and Judith (Richard Holbert) Cassidy, both of Freeport, IL; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Robert and Raymond; two brothers; two sisters; one grandson, Jeff; and two sons-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2014, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, with Rev. Tom McClellan officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.
