Phyllis Joan Scarpella, 88, passed away on July 4, 2017 at Poudre Valley Hospital. She was born on April 8, 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska to Ester and John Harms. After graduating from high school in 1946, she married George L. Hime. The family lived in Iowa until 1962, relocating to Fort Collins, with three sons, Gregory, Michael, and Stanley. Joan was employed at Colorado State Cooperative Extension Department's payroll and insurance division from which she retired after more than 25 years. Joan loved the outdoors and the Colorado mountains. This was evident through her passions of hiking, health, and fitness. Joan hiked and camped many of the northern Colorado mountains and trails, the Milford track in New Zealand, and a Hawaiian volcano. She was a long time member of the Colorado Mountain Club and shared her love of hiking by leading many group hikes. After retiring, she and second husband Richard Scarpella began traveling. With a home in Red Feather, CO and in Green Valley, AZ, they began the winter-summer shuffle. Together, Joan and Rich hiked and camped trails throughout the southern Arizona deserts. After the death of her husband, Joan continued traveling the US in her pickup camper. In 1999, she married Ray Brunson and they made Fort Collins their home. Over the next 18 years they traveled to 48 of the 50 states, many National Parks, 22 foreign countries and various islands. Her favorite trips included an extended tour of China and a safari of central Africa's National Game Parks. She also enjoyed bird watching on her many travels. Later, Joan painted many scenes of the places they had visited. Joan and Ray were an active couple and enjoyed ballroom dancing, fishing, and camping with their grandchildren. Joan is survived by her husband, Ray, sons Gregory and his wife Julia, Michael, Stanley, and stepchildren Jeff Scarpella (Roda), Beverly King, and Linda Shearer (Mark). She had multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren through her immediate and extended families. Joan will be missed by a host of friends, co-workers, and fellow hikers. Joan was preceded in death by her mother, father, brothers; Dwight and Dwayne and husbands; George and Richard. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date for the purpose of remembering her beautiful life. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the .
