Porfiria "Marty" Martinez, 92, a lifetime resident of Wagon Mound, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014 in Watrous.She was born on Dec. 6, 1921, in Ocate to Agustin Fernandez and Natividad Casias Fernandez.She was joined in matrimony on Dec. 18, 1938, to Alfredo Martinez.A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of Santa Clara Church in Wagon Mound.Porfiria was a very strong and courageous woman and always was helping at the family ranch. She never forgot the ranch where they lived their early years of marriage, after her husband passed away she continued to live on the ranch where they lived for more than 50 years.One day she was outside and her dogs spotted a mountain lion coming towards her. She got her single-shot when the dog chased the lion up a tree. She killed the lion and said she was glad her husband taught her how to shoot. She was also known for her home cooking and delicious pastries and tortillas she made.She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfredo Martinez; and parents, Agustin Fernandez and Natividad Casias Fernandez.She is survived by her daughters, Persides "Persie" Miera and husband, Daniel, and Stella Contreras and husband, Cecilio, all of Albuquerque; sons, Rudy Martinez and wife, Nancy, of Albuquerque, David Martinez and wife, Lourdes, of Tucumcari; grandchildren, Paul Miera, Phillip Contreras, Monica Olivas, Adrian Contreras, Jeanette Sanchez, Nanette Sandoval, Alex Martinez, Clarence Martinez and Timmy Martinez; great-grandchildren, Andrea Miera, Ruthann Contreras, Phillip Contreras, Jr., Teri Contreras, Danielle Olivas, Lorisa Olivas, Dominic Sandoval, Johnny Martinez, Jordan Velasquez and Joseph Velasquez; six great-great grandchildren; sister, Virginia Stiens and husband, Willie of Colorado Springs, Colo.; numerous, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.She will be greatly missed by all of her family and the family offer a special thank you to her grandson, Paul Miera and her neighbor, Peggy Gray for all their wonderful help and assistance, God bless both of you for all you have done.Rosary devotional services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Santa Clara Catholic Church in Wagon Mound immediately followed with the funeral mass. Burial will follow at the Santa Clara Cemetery in Wagon Mound with the following serving as casket bearers: Larry Olivas Jr., Paul Miera, Adrian Contreras, Phillip Contreras, Danny Gray Jr. and Dominic Sandoval.
