Prudence Gould Muran Obituary

Jun 09, 1923 - Nov 09, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Prudence Gould MuranPrudence Gould Muran was born on June 9, 1923, in Reno. She passed away near her home in Tahoe City on November 9, 2016. Prudence was a fourth-generation Nevadan, the daughter of Clifford E. Gould and Ruth E. Gould. She graduated from Reno High School and earned her Bachelor's degree in education from the University of Nevada. In 1942, Prudence married Neal Laurence Muran, a fellow lifelong Nevadan whose grandparents were early residents of Reno. The ceremony took place in Los Angeles, at Griffith Park, where the 121st anti-aircraft division had its headquarters during World War II. At the time of their marriage her husband was stationed in Los Angeles and Prudence worked at North American Aviation where they were building the P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers. After the war, Prudence and Neal made a life in Reno, and built a house on a piece of land they were given as a wedding present on Prudence's great grandfather Gould's ranch on Mill Street. Together, the couple raised three children. Prudence enjoyed a long career as a primary teacher in Reno elementary schools. Like the grandmother she was named for, Prudence embraced a tradition of civic participation and volunteer work in Reno. She was a Brownie scout leader, a member of the Reno Republican Women's Club, and active in the Sagebrush Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. More recently, she served as an officer in the Nevada State Genealogical Society. She was a dedicated genealogist, a talented cook, and an enthusiastic technophile who began using the internet early-on, in the 1990s. Nearly two decades ago, she and her husband realized their lifelong dream of relocating from Reno to Lake Tahoe. In a cozy mountain home that they affectionately called their treehouse, the couple watched the seasons change, read history books, enjoyed each other's company—and, at one point, chased a curious baby bear out of their kitchen. Prudence's loved ones remember her as a true representation of her family's long-held frontier values. She was nurturing, resilient, and outspoken when she needed to be—including in a decades-long fight she has waged to save her family's 19th-century burial ground in Hillside Cemetery from developers. Prudence was predeceased by her beloved husband, Neal, their infant daughter Elizabeth, her parents and her sister Ione Raichlen.Prudence is survived by three children, Barbara Muran, Mary Catherine LaFrance, and John Muran; nine grandchildren, Neal, John, Michael and Pat Way, Katie Fears, Kris Lujan, Katherine Bolin, Adrienne LaFrance, and Kevin Muran; 11 great-grandchildren, Meagan, Cherysha, Maxwell, Leo, Norah, and Naomi Way, Robert and Bradley Lujan, Benjamin Bruggy, James Bolin, and Edith Jordan; and 1 great-great-grandchild, Priscilla Bruce. In lieu of flowers, donations to in Prudence's memory would be greatly appreciated: c/o Kerak Shrine, 4935 Energy Way, Reno, Nevada 89502.A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 4:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Tahoe City, located at 390 Fairway Drive, Tahoe City, California.
