Adam, Ray C.Ray C. Adam was born on January 12, 1920 in Aquilla, TX to the late Ernst and Margaret Burt Adam. He is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NL Industries, Inc. He joined NL Industries in 1972 as Chief Operating Officer and a Director of the company. In July 1974, he was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer serving until 1983. Prior to joining NL Industries, Mr. Adam had been with Mobil Oil Corporation for 26 years, starting as a Process Engineer. He served that company in a number of senior staff and operating positions, including the director of the North American and Corporate Planning Departments, Executive in charge of North American Refineries & Pipelines. He was appointed a Corporate Vice President and President of its Mobil Chemical Company subsidiary in 1970.He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arkansas in 1946. In 1982, he received a Doctor of Law (Hon.) from his Alma Mater. He was Chairman of the New York City Cerebral Palsy Fund Development Fund Drive from 1974 to 1982. In 1981 and 1982, he was National Corporate Development Chairman for United Way of America.Mr. Adam served with the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 in the Chemical Warfare Service, leaving with the rank of Captain. Mr. Adam served on the board of directors of a number of public companies including American Broadcasting Companies, NL Industries, J.P. Morgan Bank, Metropolitan Life Insurance, Cities Services Oil Co., and Freeport McMoran Companies.More recently, he was a director of Bristol-Myers Squibb Inc., and Dillon, Read and Company, Inc. He has served as a member of the Business Roundtable, The Business Council and the Council on Foreign Affairs, Economics Club (N.Y.), and the Foreign Policy Association, and Council of Retired Chief Executives.Mr. Adam belonged to a number of Clubs including Augusta National Golf, Blind Brook and Silver Spring. Mr. and Mrs. Adam are members of the United Methodist Church of New Canaan. He is survived by his wife of sixty eight years, Dorothy Talley Adam (New Canaan, CT) children Randal Adam (Healdsburg, CA) and Laurie Jacob (Wellesley, MA) and five grandchildren, Rachel Adam, Jessica Adam, Tyler Adam, Chapin Jacob, and Charles Jacob. Also surviving Mr. Adam is his brother Gilbert Adam, of Dallas, TX and his two step sisters Martha Steed, of Prescott, AR and Mary Williams of Jerome, AZ. He is pre-deceased by his Granddaughter Daryth Wynn Jacob in 2006 and his brother Ralph Adam. Ray and Dorothy have resided in New Canaan since 1959.The family will receive friends at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St, New Canaan, CT on Thursday, December 15, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 16th at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan.
