CARLISLE SFC (Ret.) Ray K. Miller, U.S.
Army, 98, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at the Church of God Home, Carlisle. He was born on July 15, 1915, in York County, a son of the late Ivan L. and Louisa (Markley) Miller. He was married for more than 60 years to the late Dorothy E. (Lau) Miller, who died Oct. 28, 2006. Ray was a U.S. Army veteran of
WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He retired as Sergeant First Class with more than 28 years of honorable service. Ray earned and was awarded several honors and medals for his service, including two
Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Good Conduct Medal Silver Clasp with 2 Loops. After retiring from the Army, Ray worked for the Carlisle Suburban Authority Water Treatment Plant in North Middleton Twp. He was a life member of Carlisle
V.F.W. Post 477, Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Post 101, Carlisle, where held various offices and was a Past Post Commander. Prior to Ray's enlistment in the Army, he had worked for FDR's Civilian Conservation Corp from 1933 to 1936. He is survived by two sons, Maynard R. Miller of Panama City, FL and Jeffery L. Miller of Vicenza, Italy; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Mark and Alison Miller, all of Mezzocorona, Italy; and several nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by three brothers, Warren H., Paul I. and Levere Miller; and four sisters, Laura G. Smyser, Emma L. Markley, Theda R. Miller and Elva M. Hinkle. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, 1921 Ritner Hwy., Carlisle, with Chaplain Bradley V. Moore officiating. Cumberland County Honor Guard will provide military honors. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
