A Life Well Lived

Richard Guilford

April 1, 1950 - September 15, 2023

In loving (and slightly amused) memory, we bid farewell to Richard Guilford, legendary Newport News resident, who left this world with a smile on his face and probably a prank up his sleeve. Born on April Fool's Day, Richard lived his life to the fullest, sprinkling mischief and laughter wherever he went.

Richard was known for his mischievous wit and endless pranks, which he executed with the precision of a master magician. There wasn't a whoopee cushion he hadn't sat on, a fake spider he hadn't placed on someone's shoulder, or a banana peel he hadn't expertly positioned to trip an unsuspecting victim. His friends and family quickly learned to check their shoes for scorpions and always question the cream-filled doughnuts before taking a bite.

He endeavored to bring joy to everyone around him, and Richard's annual April Fool's Day celebrations were the stuff of legends. His elaborate pranks became the highlight of Newport News, as people eagerly awaited what shenanigans he had concocted each year. The city council even declared April 1st as "Richard Guilford Day" to honor his mischievous spirit.

Richard was not only a lively prankster but also an ardent lover of Dad jokes. His repertoire was vast, and he could tell a pun or a one-liner for every situation. Whether it was a wedding, a birthday party, or a funeral (yes, he had the audacity), Richard was always ready with a perfectly timed (or horribly misplaced) punchline. His jests will be remembered and groaned at for many years to come.

When Richard wasn't busy pulling pranks or telling jokes, he enjoyed spending his time with his beloved dog, Buster. The two partners in crime could often be spotted exploring the neighborhood, plotting their next comedic caper, and spreading laughter wherever they went.

In his professional life, Richard embraced his playful nature as a professional clown for over three decades. He brought joy to countless children and adults alike, wearing his oversized shoes and red nose with pride. He believed that laughter was the best medicine, and he certainly lived up to that motto.

Richard also leaves behind 4 daughters Susan Guilford, Wendy Guilford, Kim Hopkins and Cece Guilford; 2 grandson’s Torey Guilford and Vincent Moody; 2 granddaughters Macy and Marty Mckinsey to live on his legacy.

We will forever remember Richard Guilford for his mischievous antics, his infectious laughter, and his unwavering commitment to making the world a happier, sillier place. As we say goodbye, we can't help but wonder if he had one final prank waiting for us all. Rest assured, wherever Richard may be, he's probably sticking a "Kick Me" sign on St. Peter's back.

And so, dear Richard, we bid you adieu. May your pranks continue to echo in our hearts, and may you rest in eternal laughter.

You can to the family or in memory of Richard Guilford.
