Richard Gordon Seagrave died unexpectedly on July 17, 2011 of a heart attack while cycling outside of Bozeman, Montana.Rich was born on December 1, 1945 in Fall River Massachusetts to Arthur Gordon and Louise (Hall) Seagrave. He spent his childhood in Bristol, Rhode Island and in 1963 graduated from Colt Memorial High School where he played on the baseball team and sang in high school productions and all state choruses. Following high school, he attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and graduated in June of 1967. In October of the same year, Rich married Rebecca "Becky" Raser, daughter of John "Jack" Vincent and Miriam Raser. Rich and Becky had three children, Jonathan, Christopher and Sarah and were divorced in 2002. After college, Rich joined the Coast Guard and spent the majority of his career stationed in Alaska, including Sitka, Kodiak and Juneau. During his tenure he was the Executive Officer of the USCGC Citrus based in Kodiak and the Commanding Officer of the USCGC Planetree based in Juneau. In 1981, Rich retired from active duty and began work for the Coast Guard as a civilian in the Juneau Aids to Navigation Office until his retirement in April of 2002. In addition to being a devoted father, Rich enjoyed skiing in Juneau at Eaglecrest, spending time on his boat "Sunshine", and running the Klondike Road Relay with the "La Bamba" team of which he was an original member.During his retirement, Rich moved to Bozeman, MT, where he lived with his close friend and companion Roberta Ennis. While there he enjoyed cycling, cross-country skiing and spending time with their golden retrievers, Ripley and Siena. At the age of 64, Rich learned to play the saxophone, fulfilling one of his lifelong passions. Rich also had a passion for chronicling his travels and interests through photography and investigating his family's genealogy. He took great joy in recent years visiting and playing with his four grandchildren.Rich is survived by his mother Louise and sister Virginia "Jinny" Seagrave of Rhode Island, his three children, Jonathan (Amelia) of Bellingham, WA, Christopher (Tammy) of Boise, ID, and Sarah (Mike) Satre of Juneau, AK, his grandchildren Arthur (WA), Taylor and Mason (ID), and Miriam, (AK), his former wife, Becky Nunn of Oregon, and his companion, Roberta Ennis of Bozeman, Montana.Rich enjoyed his many friendships across the country and he will be truly missed by family and friends both old and new in Bristol, Juneau and Bozeman. On July 29, 2011, a celebration of his life and potluck will be held from 6-8 pm at the Bogert Park Pavilion in Bozeman, MT. In lieu of flowers his family asks that donations be made in Rich's name to the Juneau Lighthouse Association, PO Box 22163, Juneau, AK 99802.
