Richard James Bard, age 92, loving husband, amazing father and friend, passed away peacefully in Albuquerque on Sunday, May 1, 2016. He was born on July 19, 1923 in Mount Kisco, New York to James Mackey Bard and Helen Wilcox Bard. In 1939, Richard fell in love at age 17 with Mary Isabel Keefer, the love of his life. Richard and Mary were married on September 2, 1946. That magic continued for 69 1/2 years. Following WWII, where he served as an officer in the United States Navy, Richard completed his graduate studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he received his PhD in chemistry. Bard moved his family to Los Alamos in 1951 and worked at LANL for 33 years. He and Mary enjoyed world travels for 28 years. Richard was known for his kindness, fairness, competitiveness and caring demeanor. He was an avid, accomplished skier and competitive tennis player until the age of 88. He loved his rose gardens and Spanish language classes. Richard is survived by his wife Mary; children Peggy Maury and husband Allen; son Chris Bard and wife Karen; and daughter Jennifer Intulakasana and husband Bob. Surviving grandchildren include Jeffrey Bard, Michelle Maury, Lisa Maury, Christopher Intulakasana and Kayla Intulaksana as well as great grandchildren Marcus Rodriquez and Nigel Szydlowski. His sister Ruth Edick and husband Jack of Elk Rapids Michigan also survive him. Richard, also known as "Papa Bard", Dick, and Dad was known for his smile, quick wit and gentle manner and will be missed. Cremation has taken place. Interment will take place at 10 a.m. on May 12, 2016 at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Family and friends are welcome to attend.
