Schauer, Richard Louis Richard Louis Schauer died at his Fort Atkinson home on June 2, 2017. The son of Harold Kissel and Dorothy Goetsch Schauer, he was born on June 25, 1932 and grew up in Hartford, Wisconsin. After graduating from Hartford High School, he earned BS and MS degrees in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin. On September 13, l958 he married Ruth Abbott and the couple moved to the Fox Valley area where he taught at the then recently opened Fox Valley Center. Their daughter Andrea was born in Appleton. In 1962 the family moved to Madison, where Richard pursued further advanced study in mathematics. In l966 he was hired to teach at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, an appointment which lasted 35 years. He was active in faculty affairs, serving as Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences and being elected by his colleagues to serve several terms as Faculty Senate Chair. His passion for due process and academic freedom led him to active participation in the faculty union (The Association of University of Wisconsin Professionals) of which he was a member during his whole tenure at the University. He served for many years as chair of its Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee, traveling around the state to help faculty in employment disputes. In 2000 he received an award from the African-American Education Committee as well as the University Service Award "for your persistent pursuit of fairness, justice, and academic freedom." Richard enjoyed family parties, chess, travel, music, theater, collecting beer steins, and hiking in the mountains. Some of his favorite spots to travel were the Lake District and Cornwall in Britain, and the Alps and Vienna in Europe. He was loved and admired by an extended family including many relatives on both sides of his family and Ruth's sisters and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Robert (Kathryn) Schauer of Palo Alto, and a beloved aunt, Marion Gustafson, of Milwaukee. He is survived by his wife Ruth; daughter Andrea (Jeffrey Hamm); grandchildren: Emily Hamm, Nathan Hamm, Megan (Nick) Moran, Becca (Pradip) Hari and great-grandson Aubin Hari. He will also be greatly missed by his brother John (Diana) Schauer of Milan, MI; his niece, Tracy (Gustavo Gurrieri) Schauer; two nephews, Steve (Ronnie) Schauer and Michael Schauer, along with great-nieces and nephews, and many cousins. A meeting of remembrance will be held at the Fort Atkinson Club on Saturday, July 1 at 1 PM followed by a luncheon. Memorial gifts may be made to Rainbow Hospice or Doctors Without Borders.
