Col. Robert (Bob) P. Horn, (ret.), age 88, went home to be with the Lord on July 2, 2013 in Twin Falls, Idaho. He was born on July 24, 1924 in Dayton, Ohio to Paul S. and Gertrude F. (Burkett) Horn. Bob lived in Dayton and Chicago and had many stories to tell of his childhood and living through the Depression. Aviation was always a wonder to him as a child growing up and watching the dream of flying unfold before him. In his later years, he wrote a book about his life entitled "I Wanted Wings" which gives an account of his achievement of that dream to fly as well as chronicles the life of an amazing man who was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was a member of the 381st bomb group during War II flying B17's over Europe. He had many stories to tell of those days and ultimately made the United States Air Force his life's work. He retired from the Air Force on June 30, 1977. Bob married the 'girl next door', Dorothy D. Dillard, on November 7, 1947 in Spokane, Washington where he was stationed. They shared 54 years together and had many wonderful adventures. Being in the military for 33 of those years including living in Taiwan and Japan, traveling to Hong Kong, Bangkok and Thailand with their two children, Becky and Bobby. 'The Colonel' traveled all over the world during his career, but never felt more content than when he was at home with his wife and children. He was a devoted and loving husband and father. On their 50th wedding anniversary celebration, he said these words to a crowd of friends and family, "I want to say something and I'm not sure I can quite put it into words but I will try. You must remember that if you are going to get married and have a mate to share your life with, the first thing is to be in love, completely in love. You have to give more than 100%, each of you. Anything less won't work. Finally the most important thing to make your marriage work and be the wonderful experience of your lifetime is commitment, commitment, commitment." Bob and Dottie were a wonderful example of what it takes to make a marriage work. Bob and Dottie spent wonderful retirement years traveling in their motor home, enjoying family and friends, and he spent countless hours woodworking, while Dottie Tole -painted much of what he made. Bob said 'goodbye for now' to the love of his life on June 14, 2001. He carried on through the next 12 years without her, living in Yuma, Arizona surrounded by wonderful friends during the cold winter months and spending the summers in Idaho and Utah with family and friends. Bob was a strong man of faith and committed his life to the Lord as a young man during World War II. He lived his faith daily and had a contagious positive outlook on life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy D. (Dillard) Horn, his father Paul S. Horn and his mother, Gertrude F. (Burkett) Horn. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca S. Hatfield (Bruce) of Kimberly, Idaho; Robert P. Horn II, (Dee) of Boquete, Panama; Grandchildren - Zachary J. Hall (Marybeth) of Kaysville, Utah; Ariel O. Shurtliff (Travis) of Hooper, Utah; Britnee K. Brandon (Brian) of Ogden, Utah; Joshua D. Sarlo of Salt Lake City, Utah; Karlee D. Hatfield of Twin Falls, Idaho; Bryson W. Hatfield of Kimberly, Idaho, seven great-grandchildren, Kaiya, Finley, Lilly, Jonas, Gage, Braxton and Colbie and many 'adopted' grandchildren and great-grandchildren including Amy Lee Dagner, Marinel Kniseley and Kori Cannon. There will be a Celebration of Life in honor of Bob on July 27 at 10 am, at the home of his "oldest, most favorite grandson's" home, Zachary Hall, 676 East Center Street, Kaysville, Utah. Military Honors will be given as we say goodbye for now to this brave soldier. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Parke's Funeral Home in Twin Falls, Idaho.
