Robert Alexander Garrity, 87, of Thornton, Colorado, passed Thursday, November 22, 2018. Robert was born to Leroy Alexander, and Margaret (Mimi) Crumpley on October 11, 1931. Robert and his sister, Nancy, changed their surnames to Garrity when Stanley Garrity married Margaret, after her divorce from Leroy.
Robert is survived by his wife, Barbara Herlache Garrity; two brothers, Daniel Garrity and Thomas Garrity; 2 children, Lisa Koski Garrity (Mark) and Lori Garrity Gustafson (Thor); his two grandchildren, Roland, and Liv Gustafson; and two step-children, Linda Vandenberg and Julia Vandenberg-Chen.
Robert graduated from Pembroke-Country Day in 1949 and received advanced degrees in tax law and finance from the University of Kansas. Robert served his country as part of Army Intelligence in Germany for 4 years in the late 1950s. He married Elaine Heymann, in Weilburg, Germany on March 9, 1958, and divorced in 1988. He married Barbara Herlache on December 28, 1991, and they resided in Shawnee Mission, Kansas and then moved to Thornton, Colorado after his retirement. Robert worked as an Accountant and Tax Attorney in Private Practice, and served as Chief Financial Officer of The St. Paul Companies Insurance from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.
He was active in many singing groups, including barbershop groups and the Minnesota Oratorio Society. He was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview, MN, and Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City, Kansas where he was also very active in the choirs there. He also volunteered his time to several charities, the last being a Court Appointed Special Advocate in Thornton.
At Robert's request, his body will be donated to the University Colorado for the advancement of science. Donations may be made in his name to Salvation Army, Pembroke Hill School, Shriner's Childrens, and City Union Mission. A memorial service will be announced. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him well. He was known as one of the kindest souls and was a sweet and caring man.
