Robbins, USA retired, transitioned home on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at Memorial University Medical Center.Robert was a native of Wilmington, North Carolina, who had lived in Liberty County for the past 39 years. He was born on February 25, 1941, in Wilmington.His sons, Robert D. Robbins Jr. and Joseph H. Fullwood; his father, Robert Thomas Davis; his mother, Margaret Mosley Boykin; and his sister, Hazel Davis McCants; preceded him in death.After graduating from Williston High School in 1959, Robert enlisted in U.S. Air Force and served for five years before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1964. Shortly after enlisting in the Army, he received an invitation to attend Officer's Candidate School. He graduated from OCS and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1965. He rose in rank during his service in the Army and retired as major in 1980.Robert was an infantryman who served two tours in Vietnam and a decorated soldier. His service awards include the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal with V Device, Purple Heart (1st Oak Leaf Cluster,) Army Commendation Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster,) Air Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, three Overseas Bars, Bronze Star Medal with V Device, and Bronze Star Medal (3d Oak Leaf Cluster.)After retiring from the Army, Robert began a career as an educator with Liberty County Board of Education. He was an advocate for higher education and enjoyed helping his students find success. He was loved and respected by his peers and students. He retired from teaching in 2002. After his retirement from Liberty County Board of Education, he became a member of the Southeast Corvette Club and served on the Historic Preservation Commission Board as a representative for the city of Hinesville.He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mrs. Agnes M. Robbins; one son, Ronnie Robbins (Dawn) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one daughter, Roberta D. Thomas (Jeremiah) of Lawrenceville; three granddaughters, Juanita Fullwood of Wilmington; Jillian Thomas of Lawrenceville; and Caitlin R. Robbins of Virginia Beach; one great-grandson, Jacheus Fullwood of Wilmington; one goddaughter, Terrica Gilliard of Midway; four siblings, James Davis (Patricia) of Wilmington, Walter Davis of Wilmington, Patricia Green (Eugene) of Leland, North Carolina, and LaTonya Lewis of Wilmington; one aunt, Georgia Hazel Davis Jackson of Wilmington; two sisters-in-law, Florence Warren (Richard) of Wilmington and Josephine Campbell of Washington, DC; two brothers-in-law, Kenith Johnson of Washington and Lucious Johnson (Marjie) of Newport News, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral service will be at noon Thursday, Dec. 8, at Baconton Missionary Baptist Church in Allenhurst. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville. Dorchester Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
