ROBERT P. (RIBS) DONAHUE FREEPORT - Ribs died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, March 14, 2014 at the Stephenson Nursing Center, Freeport, IL. He was born on Neutral Ridge near Massbach, IL on January 7, 1923 the third of nine children born to Henry and Loretta (Carroll) Donahue. He married Anne Coble on November 19, 1952 in Freeport. She passed away on June 21, 1976. He married Barbara Atherton on July 14, 1979. Ribs spent most of his career working for the Freeport Journal Standard newspaper. As a young boy, he started as a paper carrier and then after spending three years in the South Pacific as a Marine during World War II, he returned to the Journal Standard and worked in the Composing Room, retiring in 1987 as the Composing Room Superintendent. He was a life-long member of St. Mary's Church of Freeport. Ribs enjoyed spending time with his family and had a passion for sports, especially the games of golf and bowling. Survivors include his wife and 6 daughters, Theresa (Ken) Marten, Colleen (Len) Lassandro, Molly (Gary) Borneman, Erin (Rich) Stewart and Cara Giuffre all of Freeport and Bridget (Jeff) Disch of Madison, Wis. Also 18 grandchildren, Keith (Amy) Marten Belvidere, Kelly (Tony) Haymond Freeport, Kristen (Chad) Winters Chicago, Ryan (Heather) Lassandro Freeport, Neil Lassandro New York, NY, Sarah (Billy) Shroyer Freeport, Kyle and Eric Borneman Freeport, Caley (Michael) Marten Freeport, Brad and Molly Stewart Freeport, Ellen, Paula and Grant Disch Madison, WI, Vincent, Sam, Louis and, Paul Giuffre Freeport and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Brian (Mary) Donahue Bartlett, one sister Lorna Marsh Freeport and sister-in-laws Mary Donahue Rockford, Nancy Donahue Rockton, Darlene Donahue Chicago, Doris Elliott Kankakee, Helen Coble, Columbus, OH and brother-in-law, Paul (Marge) Coble Aiken, SC. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 18 at St. Mary's Church Freeport. Visitation will be held at the church at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the 10:30 a.m. service. Visitation will also take place on Monday March 17 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport with a scripture reading at 3:30 p.m. A memorial has been established in his name for St. Mary's Church.
