Robert Garza, 87, of Hawthorne, California, passed away on October 02, 2021. Robert was born on June 07, 1934. He was born in San Ramon Ranch (Laredo, Texas) to Francisco and Ofelia. He grew up with six siblings. He and his family moved to Perrysburg, Ohio and then to Tecumseh, Michigan where the family built a house and where his sister still resides.
Growing up in Texas, the family became friends with the Chilton family. Robert and their son John became very good friends. They had many family gatherings together and stayed in touch for many years. Robert enjoyed country music and was a big fan of the artist Glen Campbell. He liked watching sports especially football. Some of his favorite hobbies were playing baseball, running, playing his guitar, and cooking especially barbeque.
In the late 1950s, Robert moved to California and married Petra Curiel in 1959. Their marriage resulted in the birth of their son, Robert and daughter, Lillie. He received his GED from University High School in Horticulture. A special talent he had was being able to name every tree and plant by their scientific name. He used these skills as an employee for the city of Santa Monica and Culver City as a tree trimmer and as a groundskeeper for UCLA. He was also very organized and this was put to use as a transporter for Cedars Sinai Medical Center.
Robert was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in Michigan. The congregations he attended were the Mar Vista Spanish, Santa Monica Spanish, and the Marina/Venice English. He always talked about how much he enjoyed attending the Divine Will International Assemby at Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds in 1958. Even though his meeting attendance was limited due to his health, he enjoyed the JW videos and magazines that were shared with him which he in turn shared with his nurses and staff.
A few favorite memories from Lillie Hall are going fishing with her dad at the Venice pier at 430am and embarking on the boat at Santa Monica Pier, traveling up north to attend the conventions, and going out for our morning runs.
In addition to his daughter Lillie Hall, Robert is survived by his grandchildren Nancy (Frank) Blackwell and Christopher (Marisol) Hall, great grandchildren Derek, Dylan, Devon, Donovan, Mareli, and Elijah, his sister Esperanza and brothers Luke, Mike, and George and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in passing by his son Robert, great grandson Dominic Blackwell, his sister Enedelia Moran and brother Tony Garza, and his parents.
The family would like to thank everyone for their cards, flowers, and phone calls during this difficult time.
