HauptRobert Karl Haupt, age 93, died at home on August 16, 2017 in Elkland, Mo. He was born on June 19, 1924 in Rochester, NY, the first son of Karl William Haupt, a mechanical engineer, and Edythe Gano Herier Haupt, a secretary and homemaker.Bob spent his early years in Providence, Rhode Island. The family was transferred to Warren, Ohio in 1937 by Grinnell, his father's employer. Bob was co-editor of the Warren G. Harding Senior High School newspaper, enjoyed acting in the senior play and ran the public address system during football games. During the summers, he studied art with his great-uncle, Charlie Boebinger at the Ohio Mechanics Institute. With the assistance of his high school principal, Bob was awarded a scholarship to attend Columbia College in New York upon graduation in 1942. Bob and his brother, Dick, were both honored as Distinguished Alumni by Warren G. Harding Senior High School in 2002 and 2001.After entering Columbia College, Bob enlisted in the Navy in January 1945 during World War II. He served as an Electronics Technician on the flagship USS Rocky Mount in the Pacific Ocean. After being discharged in 1946, he returned to Columbia and switched from engineering to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree and admission to the Columbia University School of Architecture. Bob received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College in 1948 and a Bachelor of Architecture from the School of Architecture in 1951. In 1975 the school awarded him a Master of Architecture in lieu of the Bachelor of Architecture.After the war, Bob worked temporarily in the Registrar's office at Columbia, helping to handle early registration of returning veterans. There he met and began to date Marcia Catherine Balfour in 1946, while she was working and majoring in zoology at Barnard College. Bob and Marcia married on June 8, 1951 at the Riverside Chapel in New York City, the day after Bob's graduation from the School of Architecture. They moved to North College Hill, north of Cincinnati, Ohio. They later resided in Mt. Airy, Mt. Healthy and Mt. Airy again after his retirement. Bob joined the Harry Hake architectural firm, founded in Cincinnati in 1897, where he had worked for several summers. Marcia worked as a medical social worker until the birth of their first child. Bob later became one of 5 partners at Harry Hake and Partners. The firm had a wide-ranging architectural practice with an emphasis on medical and hospital work in Ohio and beyond. In 1978 when Harry Hake's grandson retired, Bob and his partner, Russell Champlin, continued the firm under the name Champlin/Haupt Architects Inc., now known as Champlin Architecture. Bob and Marcia were active members of the Mt. Healthy Christian church for many years. Bob retired in 1986 and moved with Marcia in 2004 to Elkland to live near their daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Gary Milam. Bob loved spending time with his grandchildren, reading, cooking, gardening, geology, fishing, birdwatching and sharing his nature photography on the computer with family and friends. Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and son and will be missed by many. Bob is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen H. Milam and Gary D. Milam, of Elkland, Mo.; his daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen Haupt Hawkins and James P. Hawkins, of Middletown, NJ; his son and daughter-in-law, Karl Hunter Haupt and Marilyn S. Haupt, of Galveston, TX. He leaves 5 grandchildren, Shanna K. Burrell and her husband, Christopher R. Burrell of Fair Grove, Mo.; Myra C. Milam of Brooklyn, NY; Robert M., Bianca B. and Margaret A. Haupt of Galveston, TX; and great- grandson, Hunter M. Haupt of Galveston. Bob was preceded in death in 2007 by his beloved wife, Marcia, and his brother, Richard W. Haupt, in 2006. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Fair Grove Public Library or a .
