Robert John Richter of East Tawas passed away on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Tawas St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City, age 86 years. Robert was born on May 11, 1925, in Saginaw to Charles H. and Eleonor (nee Leasch) Richter. During his working career, he was the former owner of Harbor Lights Restaurant in East Tawas, an employee of Alpena Candy Company for many years, former owner and realtor of Arliss Woodward Real Estate Agency, and he also worked for Best Choice Realty as a realtor. Robert had many interests in life; however, he will always be remembered for his love of music, singing, golfing, playing cards, the beauty of Tawas Bay and riding his bike and visiting with all his many friends. He was a former member of the Community Chorus in Tawas. Robert was also a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was very involved with the church choir and he served as an usher and a Sunday School superintendent for many years. He also was a member of the East Tawas Men's Club and a member of the Tawas Kiwanis Club, having served in many positions, including president. Robert is survived by his three loving daughters, Marsha (Michael) Herrick of East Tawas, Marjorie Cano of Tawas City and Roberta (Michael) Habowski of Southfield; six grandchildren, Heather (Sarah) Herrick-Silka, Chad (Peggy) Herrick, Christie (Kevin) Ecarius, Derrick LaVere, Scott Habowksi and Samantha Habowski; seven great-grandchildren, Alexa, Lukas, Maximus, Ethan, Emma, Brooke and Paxton; one brother, William Richter of Kalamazoo; his very special friend, Lynn Roll; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1990; his parents, Charles and Eleonor Richter; one brother, Charles Richter; and three sisters, Grace Culver, Dorothy Young and June Woodward. Funeral services were held Sept. 3 at Zion Lutheran Church in Tawas City with Pastor Steven Mahlburg officiating. Interment took place in Tawas City Memory Gardens Cemetery.
