Robert L. Manning 1924 - 2016REMSEN - Robert L. Manning, 92, of Military Road, passed away on November 22, 2016, at the Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boonville.He was born on March 26, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, to Robert M. and Priscilla (Summerfield) Manning. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and enlisted in the
US Navy in May 1943, where he trained to become an officer. He served on the USS Sumner in Operation Crossroads, the Navy's 1946 test of nuclear weapons at Bikini Atoll. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended Syracuse University, where he received his degree in chemical engineering in 1949. At Syracuse, he also met Betty Ferris, who became his wife in 1950. Bob worked for several chemical and pharmaceutical companies and, in 1959, his job with Pfizer Corporation sent the Manning family overseas, first to Brazil, then Mexico and Japan. The family returned to the US in 1969 and, in 1973, Bob accepted a job at Dale Engineering (later Stetson Harza) in Utica, where he worked until his retirement in 1991. Bob was active in the community, serving on the Poland Central School Board and the Town of Russia Planning Board for many years.Bob is survived by Betty; his children, Tom, Karen, Jim and Jennifer, as well as their spouses; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a fond extended family. Bob also leaves behind many dear family friends, including Maria Clara Falcon, who in recent years has been his devoted caregiver.Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main Street, Newport, are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be no formal funeral service at this time.The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville who made a difficult time easier with their kind care.In memory of Bob's advocacy for the environment and good government, the family encourages donations in Bob's name to the Sierra Club or Common Cause.
