Robert Mitchell "Bob" Walker, 88, of West Virginia Avenue, Springfield, passed away at 8:16 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, at the Norton Hospital in Louisville.A native of Washington County, he was born on Oct. 5, 1928, to the late Mitchell Taylor and Frances McElroy Walker.He was a lifelong member of the Springfield Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, longtime president of the Men's Brotherhood, various committee's over the years and had sung in the church choir since the age of 16. He was a 1947 graduate of Springfield High School and was the first male student to attend St. Catharine College. He was a longtime associate of the James I. Miller Tobacco Company and plant manager for Springfield Redryer Company, two former tobacco businesses in Springfield. Bob was a tobacco buyer and dealer in the Carolina's and worked the fall market locally his entire working career.On July 11, 1950, in Springfield, he was united in marriage to Ann Carney who preceded him in death on May 31, 2014. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Martha Hale on Sept. 17, 2000, and his brother, Rev. Thomas Browning Walker on July 6, 2014.Survivors include two sons, Eric Walker and his wife, Maura of Springfield and John F. Walker of Lexington, his daughter, Lisa Walker of Springfield, Tennessee, two grandchildren, Josh Walker and his wife, Jacqueline and Erica Walker, two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Colin Walker and a sister, Ellen Pile of Lexington.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, at Springfield Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Wittekind and Rev. Tobe Yankey, officiating.Burial followed in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.Serving as honorary pallbearers were Ruth Ann Hardin, the church secretary and members of the Pal's Sunday School Class.Casket bearers were Tobe Yankey, Jeff Hale, Jamie Russell, Mel Grissom, Larry Hamilton and Glenn Devine.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Springfield Baptist Church Building Fund or Oneida Baptist institute.Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
