BUTLER — Robert D. Platz, 87, of rural Butler and formerly of Garrett, passed away at 8:05 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2015, at The Cedars in Leo. He had been a patient there for the past two days. Robert was born on December 25, 1927, in Elkhart, a son of Floyd E. and Martha Louise (Webster) Platz. As a young boy he moved to Fort Wayne, and for 43 years worked as a farm hand for Theodore M. Bowser Sr. of Garrett. He retired in 1998 and moved to Butler where he resided with Theodore M. Bowser Jr. until his recent illness. In his leisure time he enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, and camping, and also enjoyed playing Bingo. The surviving relatives include three siblings, Betty Walker of South Bend, Paul (Linda) Platz of Edwardsburg, Michigan, and Raymond (Mary) Platz of Lakeville; and his caregiver Theodore M. Bowser Jr. of Butler and his family. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 1970; three brothers, Floyd, George, and Larry Platz; and by seven sisters, Lola Blocher, Evelyn Glanders, Lenora Tribbey, Margaret Platz, Mildred Platz, Gertrude Platz, and Roberta Nation. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Cedar Creek Cemetery, south of Garrett. Pastor David Stien of Heritage Community Church will officiate, and interment will follow. Friends may call at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Memorials should be directed to the funeral home to defray final expenses for Mr. Platz.
