UNION GROVE - Robert W. "Broadway Bob" Metzler, 83, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 27, 2012 at Manor Care in Kenosha. He was born on September 27, 1928, to William and Christine (nee: Burkart) Metzler in Green Bay, WI where he spent his early life. Bob served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and Korea. He left the reserves with the rank of Sergeant. On September 20, 1958 he was united in marriage to, his wife of 53 years, the late Marion Curtiss, in Milwaukee WI. Bob was one of the founders and the owner, operator and promoter of the Great Lakes Dragaway "just a burnout west of I-94" in Union Grove. He is a member of the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame. Bob loved his life at the drag strip. In his later years he operated the souvenir shop. He also traveled to different events around the country promoting drag racing, including the annual International Drag Racing Hall of Fame Banquet and the SEMA show in Las Vegas. He appeared in many parades throughout the area. Bob is survived by his sister Carolyn Metzler and her friend Rev. Prochnow of Cape Coral, FL, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter Patty, an infant son William Robert and 4 sisters: Delores, Arlene, Audrey and Shirley. Relatives and friends can visit and share memories at Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home on Saturday, August 11, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again on Sunday, August 12, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A public graveside service with full military honors will take place at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Monday, August 13, 2012, at 1 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to the Veterans Assistance Program, 21425 Spring St. Cottage 16, Union Grove, WI 53182 to aid homeless veterans.
