ODESSA - Robert Zane Toombs, 89, of Odessa, Texas passed away on December 15, 2016 in Odessa. Visitation will be 2:00-3:00pm on Saturday, December 17 at the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home in Odessa, Texas. Interment will be held at the Veteran's National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas at a later date. Zane was born on November 23, 1927 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to Charles W. Toombs and Clara Agnes Utter Toombs. He began school in California before moving to Wichita Falls in 1932. He graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1944. He attended Midwestern University to study chemical engineering, before joining the Marine Corps in 1946. Zane was a veteran of
World War II. After the war Zane moved to Snyder, Texas to work for Waukesha Sales and Services Incorporated. In 1953, Zane went to work for Y-Z Industries for twenty years. In 1972, Zane married Nell Bloodworth-Turner in Silver, Texas. Zane then became the foreman of the Ignition Shop for Engine Service and Supply in Odessa, Texas where he was a valued and loved employee before retiring in 1988. Zane was an accomplished photographer and writer. His photographs and articles have been published in the Odessa American and several other Texas newspapers. He was an avid geologist and astronomer, building his own telescope that captured pictures of comets. Zane was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorma Hallford, and his son, Charles "Chuck" Toombs. He is survived by his wife, Nell Toombs of Odessa, his son, Robert Gerald Toombs of Wiley, Texas. Three granddaughters, Brandy Toombs of Grand Prairie, Elizabeth Toombs of Latvia, Shania Kai Toombs of Wiley, and one great-granddaughter, Alexis. He is also survived by three step-daughters Kaye Elliott and husband Gary of Crowley, Texas, Gayle Kubena and husband Randy of Hermleigh, Texas, Cindy Donaldson of Ft. Worth. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Home Hospice. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
