KINSTON | Roger Lee Henderson passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital at the age of 90. A native of Jones County, he was born on August 10, 1925, to the late Clen and Fleta Henderson. Roger was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris; brother, Manley Henderson; and sister, Nannie Mae Howard. Survivors include daughters, Donna Henderson Gray and husband Rodney, of Wilson and Becky Henderson Whittington and husband Wynn, of Kinston; grandchildren, Joseph Lee Ervin and Jason Neal Ervin of Raleigh, Jordan Henderson Ervin and wife Julia, of Kinston, and Lauren Gray Galloway and husband Miles, of Greenville. Roger was owner and operator of Henderson's Food Center for 30 years where he served the community with his kind-hearted generosity. He continued his love for grocery stores as he became know as the "Collard Man." Roger was a competitive and avid card player, a passionate fisherman, and a dedicated Bingo player. Until his recent declining health, he was an active and faithful member of Northwest Christian Church where he enjoyed fellow-shipping with others who loved the Lord as he did. For the past two years, he was fortunate to live at Herritage Elite, a wonderful Christian home. He left Lori, Mike and all the staff with many special memories and stories to tell. His family is forever indebted to the folks at Herritage Elite for loving him and caring for him while maintaining his dignity. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 29, 2016, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home in Kinston and other times at the home of Wynn and Becky Whittington, 906 West Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Herritage Elite, 910 N. Heritage Street, Kinston, NC 28501. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at Westminster United Methodist Church with the Rev. Amos Sykes and the Rev. Haywood Smith officiating. Burial will follow the service at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Edwards Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
