Roger S. LikesMANSFIELD: Roger S. Likes, 83 of Mansfield passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones Monday, May 8, 2017 at his youngest daughter's home who was his primary caregiver.Roger was born on Nov. 27, 1933 in Ashland, OH to Clarence A. and Helen E. Likes.Roger served 2 years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on Sept. 30, 1962 due to a family emergency. Roger married Helen M. Lyons on April 4, 1959. Roger worked as a tool & die maker at the Mansfield General Motors Plant and retired after 50 years of service on Aug. 1, 2006.Roger completed up to the 9TH Grade in school and was proud to have started his own business of H.M. Likes Drilling & Trenching that he worked with his dad building homes before heading to his other job at General Motors on 2nd shift. Roger taught his knowledge of trade and skills of the Drilling & Trenching business to his brother-n-law, George Karbula, as well as his own 5 children. Roger was also proud to have been the one to install the waterlines and hydrants at the Richland County Fair Grounds.Roger was always known to have had a "sweet treat" in his pocket to hand out to anyone he encountered to put a smile on their face. He had a giving and compassionate heart that was quick to help others without any hesitation. Roger enjoyed his yearly Easter trips with his family to St. Petersburg, FL to camp out and visit his nephew, Sam, (who he grew up with and lovingly referred to as his brother) and his wife Thelma ("T"). Roger really enjoyed working on vehicles in his "Garage" and teaching his 5 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the tricks of his trades over the years. Providing his knowledge and helping his family throughout his life on various projects. Roger enjoyed working on the farm his eldest son, Mark, owned. Roger enjoyed his Las Vegas trips to Casino's with his wife, Helen, and when they could no longer travel, he enjoyed the local Casino in Columbus where he would invite his family to participate and enjoy his favorite place to eat (Waffle House). Roger enjoyed playing the Ohio Lottery and passing out scratch off tickets to his family during Christmas time and spending time with his family. Roger, along with his wife Helen, were able to return to their original home to live, where they started their marriage together 58 years ago and soon after began their family of 5 children, by living with their youngest daughter, Susan.Roger is survived by his wife, Helen M. Likes of 58 years. Two sons; Mark (Deb) Likes and Scott Likes both of Mansfield, three daughters; Cheryl (Bill) Clark of Greenwich, Carol (Dave) Robertson of Shiloh, and Susan Likes Reed of Mansfield, 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way due in June; two sisters, June Craig of Bellfountain, and Betty Likes of Belle Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Helen E. Likes, step-mother, Winona Likes, nephew, Sam H. Maxhimer and great-grandson, Khyrhyn James.Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, ltd, 1106 Park Ave. East, Mansfield. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017, at the funeral home.
