Rosa Dossett Eggleston died in her home on July 10, 2015 of complications due to heart disease. She was 73 years old. Granddaughter of Thurston Hamblett and daughter of Rosa Moore, she was born on July 23, 1941 in Memphis, TN. As a young woman, Rosa Kate Dossett, whose family hailed from Lula, Mississippi, was stylish and striking. She caught the eye of a young man named William Eggleston, Jr. and they began dating as teenagers. The handsome couple cut a striking figure across the Mississippi Delta, and in the early days they were known for their matching blue Cadillacs. They married in 1964 and had three children together. Their lifelong relationship ran deep and strong, and Rosa remained his faithful confidant throughout her life. A loving and devoted mother, Rosa was a unique, intelligent woman known for her dramatic flair and sharp tongue. She was a voracious reader with an extensive vocabulary, and her literary inclinations fostered an appreciation of proper grammar. Her creativity and curiosity for the world around her was evident in her own writing and her love of diverse cuisine. A consummate conversationalist, she had the ability to get along with a diverse cast of characters. She is survived by her husband, William Eggleston, Jr.; three children, William Eggleston III (Daniela), Andra Eggleston (Emery Dobyns), and Winston Eggleston (Elizabeth); and five grandchildren: William IV, Nicholas, May, Louis, and Olivia. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, July 16 at Canale Funeral Directors, 2700 Union Avenue Extended, Memphis, TN 38112. Graveside service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, July 18 in Oakridge Cemetery in Clarksdale, MS.
