Dr. Roy Augustus Miller Jr., 91, of New Bern, died peacefully surrounded by his family on July 16, 2012, at Bayview Nursing and Rehab Center of New Bern.
He was born on May 18, 1921, in Pollocksville, son of the late Rev. Roy Augustus Miller Sr. and Nina Hall Miller.
After graduating from New Bern High School, he attended Wake Forest College and the Medical College of Virginia where he received a DDS degree. Dr. Miller practiced dentistry in New Bern for 55 years. He was a member of the American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society, and the Craven County Dental Society. Upon his retirement from active practice he served with the Craven County Health Department in their Dental Unit.
Dr. Miller was a member of the New Bern Lions Club for 60 years receiving The Melvin Jones Lifetime Membership Award. He was an active member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church for over 70 years serving as the choir director in the 1950's and 1960's. Known for his beautiful voice he sang at weddings and funerals. He was a deacon and taught the Senior Men's Sunday School Class until he was 85 years old. After his retirement, he faithfully served with the Church's Prison Ministry.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Leroy and Martha Alligood for all their love and support during his illness. They would also like to thank Linda Fornes and Sue Raspelli as well as the other staff at Bayview Nursing and Rehab Center for their care during his stay there.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Elizabeth Pugh Miller; daughters, Mary Beth Miller Harper and her husband James Lonnie Harper of Jacksonville, Jenny Lynn Miller Tolson and her husband Charles Kenneth Tolson of Charlotte; granddaughter, Jamie Harper Wilkerson and her husband Robert Wilkerson of Cary; sister, Margaret Miller Webb of Raleigh; niece, Margaret Ann Webb Bohannon and her husband John Bohannon; sister-in-law, Dorothy Pugh Spence of New Bern. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Roy Augustus Miller III.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, George Street in New Bern. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
