Ruby Richey GilchristRuby Richey Gilchrist, 95, passed away August 1, 2017, at Mount Royal Towers in Birmingham, Alabama where she moved in 2008 to be closer to her daughter, Frances and her family. Ruby was born on April 4, 1922, in Alexandria, Louisiana to Alfred and Elzie (Woodson) Richey. She lived most of her life in Pineville, Louisiana and graduated from Bolton High school.Ruby married Robert A. "Pete" Gilchrist in 1946, once he returned home from his service in the Coast Guard during WWII. Pete went on to work as a furniture salesman, retiring from Haverty's, while Ruby managed their household and lovingly cared for their children, Robert and Frances. Ruby was a caregiver by nature, and in her later years lovingly cared for her husband, mother and brother.She enjoyed being outdoors working in the yard and her gardens. She was a longtime member of the Woodland Hills Garden Club and flowers were her passion. Ruby was a member of First Baptist Church, Pineville and thoroughly enjoyed her Sunday school class. Most of all, she enjoyed family times, particularly spending time with her grandchildren, who were her greatest loves. Ruby loved people and was always very social. She also enjoyed sewing and making arts and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Pete Gilchrist; her parents and her three brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Harper and husband, Mike of Hoover, Alabama; her son, Robert Gilchrist and wife, Susan of St. Augustine, Florida; three grandchildren, Brooke Coughlan and husband, Doug, Brian Harper, Brandon Harper and wife, Leslie; as well as numerous family members and friends.The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the Woodland Hills Garden Club for their continued friendship, support, loyalty and encouragement over the past 8 years. Their cards and phone calls have meant the world to Ruby, Frances and their family. Words cannot adequately express the family's love and appreciation to Ruby's dear and faithful friend of 60 years, Jerrie Stehr and the Nugent and Graham families for their years of friendship and loving support.Funeral services celebrating Ruby's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 4, 2017, in The Chapel of Hixson Brothers, Pineville with Dr. C. Stewart Holloway officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.The family requests that visitation be observed Friday at the funeral home from noon until time of service.Pallbearers honored to serve are Brian Harper, Brandon Harper, James Graham, Jeff Nugent and Jack Stehr.
