Rudolph "Rudy" VeltrePoughkeepsie - Rudolph J. Veltre of Poughkeepsie entered into rest Monday, July 24, 2017 at The Pines at Poughkeepsie. He was 86.Son of the late Julius J. and Geraldine Meglio Veltre, he was born on October 31, 1930 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He married the love of his life, Eleanor K. Mahoney on June 20, 1953 in Elizabeth; Mrs. Veltre survives at home in Poughkeepsie.Mr. Veltre proudly served his country in the Unites Stated Air Force from 1951 to 1954. After he was honorably discharged, Rudy went on to begin his longtime career with IBM. Through IBM he lived and worked in many cities in the United States and Europe, finishing his career at their Poughkeepsie location when he retired in 1987.Rudy had many interests in his spare time. He was an avid fisherman and chef; he was even featured as "Chef of the Week" in the Poughkeepsie Journal in January of 1970. He was an active music minister in the former St. Francis Hospital chapel in Poughkeepsie. Rudy was a charter member of the Poughkeepsie New Yorkers Barbershop Chorus. He was very active in the Cursillo movement in the Roman Catholic Church, Arch Diocese of New York. He also was a religious volunteer in several area prisons. Rudy's love for his music, faith and community only came second to the love that he had for his family.In addition to his wife of 64 years, Eleanor, survivors include his children, Jeanne M. Carfora and her husband, Joseph of Newburgh, Thomas J. Veltre and his wife, Shari of New York City and Vincent P. Veltre of Poughkeepsie; brother, Armond D. Veltre of Jupiter, FL; grandchildren, Monica J. Hanke and her husband Lawrence, Dr. Theresa M. Mastronardi and her husband, Jeffrey, Dr. Joseph M. Carfora, Paul J.M. Veltre, Vincent T. Veltre, Kathryn E. Veltre, Brian J. Veltre and Mary T. Rea and her husband, Benjamin; great-grandchildren, Jack, Daniel, Abigail and Maxwell; and several nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his brothers, Edward and Richard Veltre.Family will receive their friends on Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, July 28 at 1:15 p.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road in Poughkeepsie.
