Rufus Thomas, 80, of Vass, North Carolina, left this world on December 29, 2023, leaving behind memories that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him. Born in Vass, on July 05, 1943, to Wenona (Charles) and James Alton Thomas, Rufus was one of four boys: James (Jimmy), Aubrey (Bobby), and Sam. He moved up north as a teenager, and found work in the garment industry for 40 years. During that time he married twice and had a total of four children, Rufus and Eunice from his first marriage to Phyllis Jenkins, followed by Sheila and Michele, from his second marriage to Vivian (Fitch).

Known as Butch, Big Rufus, or Nat, Rufus was for his charismatic personality and infectious smile. He never met a stranger, and had an incredible knack for bringing joy to every room he entered. Whether through his love for music, his talent for storytelling, or his support for his church and his community, Rufus touched countless lives. His laughter and zest for life will be sorely missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
