Ruth Elizabeth Lowe-Dorchy, better known by her family as "Mama Dear", passed from this life at her home surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, October 26, 2016. Ruth was born on March 13, 1917 in Moultrie, Georgia. She is the daughter of the late Reverend Stephen and Catherine Lowe. In 1937 the Lowe family left Georgia and moved to Lakewood, New Jersey. Ruth met and married Andrew Dorchy. She is the mother of Charles and Robert and the late Shirley, James (Jimmy) Martin, Richard, & Regina, the sister of the late Eula Townsend and brother, Charles Lowe. Her husband Andrew Dorchy died January 8, 1990.Ruth was one of the founders of the Bethel Church of God in Christ, in Lakewood, New Jersey. She has remained a member and was one of the Mothers of this church. In 1950 she opened a Day-Care Center at the church, that existed into the late 1960s. She was one of the founders of the Seashore Bible College in Lakewood, where she received her B.A. Degree in Ministry and taught in the school. She also served on their Trustees Board. Ruth worked as a volunteer in the public schools, in a program called "Follow Through". This program was an extension of the Head Start Program. She served on the Parent Committee and the Advisory Board of this program, from the beginning of its existence until the program ended. When the program ended she became a Teacher's Aide at the Spruce St. School in Lakewood NJ. She also worked with the Reverend Anderson to open the first Outreach Library at the John K. Kennedy Community Center in Lakewood.For many years, Ruth spent her winter months in sunny Florida. She traveled with her daughter, Regina Dorchy to Tokyo, Japan to appear on a Japanese television show because her daughter had 4 sets of twins.A funeral service will be held on November 5, 2016 at her church in Lakewood, New Jersey.
