Ruth R. Handley passed away peacefully on June 22 at her home in Ramona, California, surrounded by the love of those who deeply cared for her. Ruth was born on March 13, 1918, in Arnold, Nebraska, to Archie and Cora Robinson and raised on her family's homestead ranch in Campbell County, Wyoming. It was there that her deep seated passion for horses was fostered; learning to ride at the young age of two. That very love would lead Ruth to embrace a lifetime of multi-faceted opportunity and achievement within the equine industry. Upon graduating from the University of Wyoming in 1941, she relocated to San Diego to begin a distinguished career of 31 years in Personnel Management that encompassed service at the University of California's Division of War Research, Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the University of California – San Diego. In 1947, Ruth married the love of her life, August E. Handley of La Jolla, California. They celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage. Their shared interest of horses and equine activities propelled their creation of Shadowland Ranch for Girls in Campo and La Jolla, California. She was a charter member of the Santa Fe Hounds fox hunting club, a founder of the San Diego Chapter of the California Dressage Society, and a pacesetter for the reorganization of the Ramona Trails and San Vicente Pony Clubs of Ramona. Those that are blessed to have known Ruth are able to find serenity in knowing that the warmth of her love and the magnitude of her influence shall far supersede her years spent here with us. Memorial services for our beloved Ruth will be held at El Camino Memorial Chapel on Saturday, July 11, at 2 pm. She will be laid to rest at Loma Siesta, El Camino Cemetery.
