NEWINGTON - Ruth Sabra (Wadsworth) Stewart, 96, of Newington and formerly of Plainville and Milton, VT., passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. She was married to the late Alfred W. Stewart for 71 years. Ruth was born on July 5, 1920, in Warehouse Point, Conn., a daughter of the late Robert Strong and Marion (Morse) Wadsworth and was a longtime Plainville resident. She was a 1939 graduate of Plainville High School and had worked at the Connecticut State Library in Hartford in the Genealogical department for many years. She worked at Tuttle and Bailey in New Britain for several years. Ruth then worked for the Plainville Board of Education as secretary to the principals at Broad Street School and Trask School for 20 years where she was an active member of both PTA's. Ruth retired on Dec. 31, 1983.Ruth was a member of the
VFW Auxiliary in Plainville and the Band Mothers of Plainville High School, as well as the secretary of the Plainville Women's Club, secretary of the Church of Our Savior Women's Guild, where she was a longtime member and Sunday School Teacher. Ruth started the Plainville Little League Auxiliary and was an avid baseball fan, who especially loved the Boston Red Sox. She had the pleasure of meeting Ted Williams. While Ruth and AI lived in Vermont, she was a reading volunteer at Milton Elementary School. She always loved antiques and crafts, and entertaining and made great friendships wherever she lived. She leaves her son, Robert W. Stewart and his wife, Jane, of Newington; her daughter, Judith E. Stewart and her husband, John Woodley, of Essex Junction, Vt.; her grandchildren, Jessica Brown and her husband, Bobby, of Berlin, Tom Stewart and his wife, Amanda, of Berlin, Frances Orbacz and her fiancé, Grif Barhight, of Denver, Colo., and Meghan Stewart, of Boston; her step-granddaughter, Anna Woodley Sheridan and her husband, Keenan and their children of Savannah, Ga.; her great-grandchildren, Ryan Brown, Reagan Stewart, and Morgan Stewart, of Berlin; her sister, Betty Mazzone and her husband, Michael, of Westerly, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Janet Hultgren and Sylvia Wadsworth; her brother, Edwin Wadsworth and many dear friends.Ruth's family would like to thank the staff of the ICU at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain for their care and support during her brief illness.Family and friends may gather for calling hours at the Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., in Plainville on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. Funeral services for Ruth will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Our Savior, 115 West Main St., in Plainville.
