Forever in your sight, Forever you'll stay in our hearts.
Samuel McWhirter Jr. was called home to rejoice his new internal spirit with all of his loved ones and friends and most importantly reuniting with his beloved wife, Betty Joann McWhirter. Sammy was 88 years young who was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather also was known as Papa or Pop. He was born in Mont Belvieu, Texas, and raised in Texas City. He peacefully passed Friday, September 27, 2019. Samuel was born to Samuel Thomas McWhirter Sr. and Iona Virginia McWhirter on April 12, 1931. Samuel graduated from Texas City Highschool. He continued his passion for football and running track at The University Of Houston, where he earned numerous rewards and medals and broke a couple of worlds records in the process. This landed him in the Junior Olympics, which quickly advanced into a career of enlisting in the United States Army. While never losing that passion for football, Fort Ord offered Samuel a contract to play ball for the Chicago Cardinals. After being honorably discharged from duty, he married Betty Joann McWhirter in 1957. They cherished their lives together in Mont Belvieu.
Samuel is survived by 6 children: Terry Lance McWhirter (Melissa Nicole McWhirter), Karen Lethan McWhirter (Donald Rose), Kris Ann McWhirter (Lacie Harrison), Shannon McWhirter (Bess), Daniel Mark McWhirter, and Sam McWhirter. Of course, he had many remarkable grandchildren: Cheyenne McWhirter, brothers Jakob Lance McWhirter, and Austin Ray Thomas McWhirter; Anna Marie McWhirter and brother Carter Thomas McWhirter; Haylin and Jade Harrison; Rachel and Haley McWhirter; and last, but not least the felines Daisy May, Chloe, Sadie, and Eva, who all were the light of his eye. You would always find Pop taking Cheyenne, Jakob, and Austin down to the bay to fish. He stayed active by taking them to the San Jacinto monument to look around with the huge telescopes! Those memories will forever remain until we reunite again.
