Sharman FitchettStuart FL - After a courageous seven year battle with ALS, Sharman Oram Fitchett, 67, of Stuart, FL, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, September 13th at her summer residence on Candlewood Lake, CT with her husband by her side.She was the daughter of the late Edward and Verona Oram, born on September 9, 1950 in Syracuse, NY. Sharman graduated from C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville, NY in 1968 and went on to receive a BA in Studio Art and MA in Drawing and Ceramics from SUNY Oswego in 1974. She married William Fitchett in 1974 and they lived together in Rhinebeck, NY for 40 years before relocating to Stuart, FL.Sharman had 2 passions as a child; art and horses. Luckily, her parents were very supportive of both interests, enabling her to ride, train, and show Quarter Horses in her youth and supporting her interests in fine arts with private art lessons from grade school through high school. She went on to have a very successful career as an Art Teacher at F.D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, NY where she not only recruited great growth for the district's art programs, but also recruited numerous students into her heart; being called a second mom to many.Her other passion in life was her love of boating and the numerous adventures experienced with family and friends onboard their beloved Milk Made based at the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club.She will be remembered for her incredibly strong and courageous spirit; frequently smiling and maintaining her sense of humor through her trials with ALS.Sharman is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, William Fitchett, and two children, Shallyn MacDonald of Elbert, CO and Ryan (Amanda) Fitchett of Medford, NJ. She is also survived by 2 sisters, Tamara McCammon of Fort Mill, SC and Rhonda (Stan) King of Cherry Valley, NY, a sister-in-law, Judy (Dan) DeLong of Longs, SC; 5 granddaughters, Evelyn MacDonald (11), Heather MacDonald (9), Raegan Fitchett (4), Avery Fitchett (2), and Rylan MacDonald (6 months); along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter at 42 Broadway #1724, New York, NY 10004, designated to the Cornell Team Hudson Valley Walk. A memorial service celebrating Sharman's life will be held at the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club on Saturday, October 7th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
