Dr. Sidney Belt Harvey III of Elk Creek, Va., completed his life's journey at home on July 26, 2017. Sidney was born on June 2, 1930, in Elk Creek. He was raised by his grandparents, Lyda and Bertie Cannoy.After graduating from Elk Creek High School he served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the
Korean War. Following his military service, he attended Virginia Tech and became the first person to receive a B.S., master's and doctorate degrees in education and school administration.During his 41 years in education and administration, he served as a teacher, coach, principal, general supervisor, director of instruction and division superintendent of Grayson County Schools.Dr. Harvey was an active member of the community. He served two terms on the Wytheville Community College Board of Directors, established a yearly fishing olympics for special-needs students, was a member of the Elk Creek Rescue Squad Auxiliary and a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church.He was also a 32nd degree Mason. His love for his family was unconditional and he shared with Shirley that his greatest joy came from being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.Sidney is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, of 61 years; their son, David and his wife Stephanie, of Blacksburg, Va., and their children, Ross and wife Kari, Sarah and husband, Eric Hanson and Ryan, and Carrie, and one great-grandson; their son, Seth, and his wife Kim, of Advance, N.C., and their children, Kara and Sam. He is also survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Pritchard and her husband, Howard, Sylvia Anthony and Linda Kirkman.He is preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Belt Harvey II and Ruth Harvey Guinn; his brother, Harold Harvey; and his daughter-in-law, Gayle.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Dr. Sidney and Shirley Harvey Memorial Scholarship Fund at Grayson County High School. Mailing address is P.O. Box 828, Independence, Va.A funeral service was at 3 p.m. Saturday July 29, 2017, at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Elk Creek. Interment was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 1:30 p.m. until time for service. Masonic service will be conducted at the church by Independence Masonic Lodge #129 A.F.A.M. Military services will be conducted at the graveside by Grayson County
