HASSELL, SPENCER R. "Jack", was born on September 13, 1928 in Roper, North Carolina to George Spencer Hassell & Martha Elizabeth Winley. He passed peacefully on April 24, 2017 in Miami, Florida. Jack was the oldest of 9 children - brothers Bill, Vernon, James, Gene, Calvin, Paul and Obie, and his sister, Mary. He is survived by his three children and their spouses - Gerald and Agnes Hassell, Wayne and Shandra Hassell, and Ginny and Bill Semersky, as well as his four grandchildren, Cynthia, Timothy, Alyssa and Jarred Hassell, his great granddaughter, Harlee Hassell, and his beloved canine companion, Abby. Jack was strong willed and fearless as he left home at the tender age of 16 and made his way down south, making brief stays where he could find work. He eventually found a place to call home in Miami in the late 1940s when he met the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Geraldine Denault, who passed in 2014. His career as a butcher lasted into his late 70s, but his true passion was his family. He loved spending time with his wife and dogs, all his siblings, children and grandchildren, near and far. His love and loyalty were felt by all and he left a strong legacy in all his endeavors. He reached the 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and was affiliated with the Hurricane Lodge 401 and Biscayne Bay lodge 124, where he could be found on many a weekend. There will be a viewing held on Friday, April 28th from 5pm - 7pm at Van Orsdel Family Funeral Chapels at 4600 SW 8th St, Coral Gables, FL 33134.
