On August 1, 1948, Steven George was born into the family of Norman Lafayette Childs and Mary Hanna (Hitchens) Childs, as the youngest of their four children Nancy, Norman L. Jr., Norma Anne, & Steven. The siblings were raised in Stratford Wayne, PA attending the Tredyffrin Township school district.
Steven attended Conestoga High School and graduated in 1966, he also attended Pierce Junior College of Technology.
In his youth, Steven loved the outdoors and learned many skills with the Boy Scouts and eventually was made an Eagle Scout. His mother introduced him to his Native American background in the Nanticoke Tribe by taking the family to pow-wows and other outings. This reinforced his love for creation.
Stevens earliest passions were cars and racing. After high school he bought for himself and modified a 1969 Z28 Chevrolet Camaro which he raced successfully and had many adventures.
Steven met Ayesha Rabbiah Taliaferro in 1967. They married in July 1972. Together they raised three children: Steven Erik, Maji (Mija) Ayesha, and Micah Timothy.
In childhood Steven attended the Mount Zion Methodist Church in Devon, PA. Steven was seeking answers from the Bible when he came into contact with Jehovah’s Witnesses, he then accepted a personal Bible Study. After recognizing the ring of truth in the Bible’s message he chose to make changes in his personality and outlook. His renewed moral conscience, based on what he learned in the Bible, led to him to decide to become one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in February 1978. Steven enjoyed the ministry, introducing people to Bible truths and watching them make changes in their daily lives to apply Bible principles. Steven and his wife raised their children in their spiritual routine. He eventually qualified to serve as an elder, and happily assisted multiple congregations.
Steven desired to serve his God loyally and extend himself in the Christian ministry. The words of Isaiah 6:8 were embedded in his heart; “Jehovah said: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I proceeded to say: ‘Here I am! Send me.’” This desire led him to full-time ministry service as a Regular Pioneer and served in the foreign language field. He and his wife exerted themselves and learned Chinese and enjoyed the privilege of living in a foreign country for many years. It was a pleasure for them to teach many people about God’s word and all its wonderful promises for a happy future.
After returning from abroad, he continued with his ministry and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
His joys in life were sharing his many stories of the outdoors and racing (street and track), playing golf (especially with his son Micah), and introducing his grandchildren to canoeing, watching dramatic movies and listening to oldies with his friends. He shared his joy of jazz, baseball, golf, football (was a die-hard Eagles fan) with his family and friends.
Steven was diagnosed with cancer in 2017. Because of his positive outlook, not focusing on his own diagnosis, many did not know that he was ill. Steven lost his fight with cancer on April 30, 2021.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Norma Anne, two brothers Norman L. Jr. and James (Sandy) Pierce. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ayesha Childs; their children Erik Childs, Mija & David Saldaña, Micah & Tiffany Childs; their grandchildren Deliah Dixon-Rascon, Emani Childs, Richard Connor, Isaac Saldaña, Sean Childs, Benjamin Saldaña, Joslyn Childs, Layla Saldaña and Steven Micah Childs; his sisters Nancy Jordan, Deborah Pierce, Gwendolyn Pierce-Taylor, Paulette E. Ware; his sisters-in-law Patricia Childs and Priscilla Renee Bennett, his dearly loved cousin Harlen King and his wife Bridget; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and a myriad of friends.
