GARRETT — Steven A. Sims, 77, of Garrett, died on Sunday April 3, 2016 at Bethlehem Woods Nursing Home in Fort Wayne. He was born on July 1, 1938 in New Albany to the late Virgil and Helen (Swabey) Sims. He married Joyce Lash on Aug 29, 1959 at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church in Avilla. She preceded him in death on Aug 21, 2012. He was a foreman at International Harvester from 1961 until 1980, and later retired from Dana Weatherhead. He owned Sims Cabinet shop in Garrett for many years and was a master cabinet maker and carpenter. He and his wife had a booth in Shipshewana selling crafts and wood items. He was an auctioneer in 1981 and 1982. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, mushroom hunting, family time, and drinking coffee with his friends. He was baptized Catholic in Saudi Arabia while serving in the U.S Air Force. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garrett. Surviving are a son, Victor (Janice) Sims of Hudson; four daughters, Charlene Underhill, Kathy (Jeff) Pettit, Jane (Bill) Tittle, and Anita Cramer, all of Garrett; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Christine (Jim) Place of Valparaiso. He was also preceded in death by a grandchild, and sisters Carmen Cook, Carol Klaviter, Gerry Jo Boyer and Sue Andressen. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church, Avilla, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation also from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Harper Funeral Homes, Avilla Chapel, 530 N Main St, Avilla, with rosary at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Avilla.
