Suzette Culbertson Fincher Obituary

Oct 03, 1946 - Oct 14, 2024

This obituary is administered by:

Suzette Marie Culbertson Fincher left this world on Monday October 14, 2024 after a 4 month battle with cancer. Born on October 3, 1946 in Chambersburg, PA to Wilmer and Alsace Culbertson, Suzette and her family heard the call to “go west young man” to Denver Colorado when she was 18 months old. Suzette grew up amongst the backdrop of the Rocky mountains and was a girl scout as a child. She graduated from East High in 1964 and attended Western Colorado University in Gunnison, CO where she skied more than attending classes.

In January 1967, she met Jimmy Fincher, who was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base and by August 18, 1967 wedding bells were ringing; and so began the journey that would culminate in 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren. In January 1968 she was left in Denver to pine for Jimmy while he served in Vietnam for a year. They were able to reconnect in beautiful Hawaii for some romantic luaus and roasted pig while he was on R and R.

After returning from Vietnam they moved to Sunnyvale, California and then after completing his time in the Air Force it was time to move south to Georgia. Suzette anticipated a large columned home on a beautiful South Georgia farm. Instead, she was greeted with a small apartment followed by a single wide trailer in the early years.

In 1972 they moved to Athens so Jimmy and she could attend UGA. In September of 1972 they welcomed their first child, Amy. While pregnant Suzette’s art teacher asked her to pose nude which Suzette promptly declined. After Jimmy graduated in 1973 they returned to Doerun to farm and by 1974 they lived in Albany where Ashley completed the family unit. After that, moving became a regular event for the next 10 years as they went from Albany, Georgia to Perry, Georgia then back to Albany then McComb Mississippi followed by Meridian Mississippi. By fortune and weird luck they landed back in Perry, Ga where they would stay for the next 31 years.

While in Perry, Suzette explored different career paths, finally landing in the banking industry, from which she retired. For hobbies, Suzette was quite crafty and loved cross stitching, making homemade Christmas ornaments, gardening, and decorating. Suzette was a loyal mom who loved her family with her whole being. In 2004 she became a grandmother to 3 beautiful grandchildren; Katelyn, Harley, and Chandler Sitz. Then in 2006 more blessings with the addition of Hannah Green, Sarah Cate in 2009, and Fincher (Cole) in 2013. To say God blessed her with family is an understatement, and anyone who knew Suzette knew her grandchildren were the crown jewels of her life. In 2018 Suzette and Jimmy moved to Saint Simons Island to be closer to their children and grandchildren. While there, she loved her quiet back patio with all her birds and flowers and her candy crush game. While Suzette was taken from this Earth far too soon, she was at peace at the end and is now whole and healthy.

Suzette’s Celebration of life will be held, Friday October 25 at 1 PM at Saint Simons Island United Methodist Church followed by a reception at their home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Saint Simons Island United Methodist Church or Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia.

You can to the family or in memory of Suzette Fincher.
