Sylvina RayStory CitySylvina Beatrice Ray, 95, of Story City died May 2, 2017 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be Friday, May 5, 2017, 2 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Jewell. Burial will be in the Story City Cemetery. Sylvina was born on May 26, 1921 in Elkton, South Dakota to Iver and Alma (Sande) Underland. She was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church, Garretson, SD and confirmed at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1939. Sylvina married Herbert Ray at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Jewell, IA parsonage on January 1, 1942. They farmed and lived west of Jewell until retiring to Story City in 1989. Sylvina was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She enjoyed maintaining her own home. Her busy weekly schedule included morning coffee at McDonalds, driving to Ames every Tuesday, playing cards and dominos with her friends and spending time with her family. She was known as "The lady in red."She is survived by two sons, Daryll (Melissa) Ray of Knoxville, TN and Sterling (Paula) Ray of Jewell; a son-in-law, Merlyn J. Hegland of Ellsworth; seven grandchildren ad nine great grandchildren. Sylvina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert W. Ray; daughter, Carol Hegland; Grandson, David Ray; Brother and sister-in-law, Orville and Lois Underland and sister and brother-in-law, Dolores and Orlin Anderson.Soderstrum Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements
